 Salaar (Part 1) Review

I’ve dived back into my Indian cinema obsession with the recent Telugu hit on Netflix: Salaar Part 1 – Ceasefire. While RRR set a high bar, I appreciate that not every film can reach that level. Salaar debuted in January after its successful run in India, becoming the third highest-grossing Telugu film of 2023.

The film follows childhood friends Deva and Vardharaja, whose lives diverge when Vardharaja intervenes to protect Deva’s mother. Years later, Vardharaja summons Deva to raise an army amidst political turmoil, leading to a ceasefire between warring tribes.

Two Ups and Two Downs

Initially marketed as “gory,” the film takes its time delivering on that promise. The first two hours focus on character dynamics rather than violence, but once you reach the climax, the bloodshed ramps up dramatically, with limbs flying and a sudden shift to a horror vibe as our heroes battle zombified warriors.
The film also features unexpected intrigue, focusing on tribal politics and alliances, which adds depth to the narrative. It prioritizes plot development, allowing viewers to understand the context of the action.
However, Salaar falls short in humor and memorable music. While it successfully blends genres, it lacks the absurdist humor and catchy tunes often found in similar films.
At three hours, this installment is dense and convoluted. With numerous characters and plotlines, it can be overwhelming, often requiring a second viewing to grasp everything.

Overall

Salaar is ambitious, but its complexity may alienate some viewers. If you can navigate its layers, there’s a rewarding story beneath the chaos, supported by impressive cinematography. However, it may be too much to absorb in one sitting.
